Holocause Memorial Week

Posted: January 26, 2015 in Uncategorized

This week is holocaust memorial week. The theme for this week is keeping the memory alive.  It particularly commemorates two significant anniversaries: the seventy years since the liberation of Auschwitz and the twenty years since the genocide at Srebrenica.

A vast amount of information including lesson plans and interviews can be found here: http://hmd.org.uk/

The Churches together web page has resource packs, prayer services and video’s too: http://www.ctbi.org.uk/582

In the past few weeks the attack on the Kosher supermarket in Paris, the anti-Islam demonstrations in Germany, the defacing of Holocaust Memorial Day posters in London and other incidents have revealed, in various degrees, evidence of misunderstandings, divisions and animosity towards particular groups in Europe.

During this week let’s pray:

  • For people around the world fearing for their lives and safety now because of their race, religion or ethnic group.
  • For all who mourn people lost in genocides, and for whom this day of remembrance is particularly sensitive. Pray that God may grant them comfort and healing.
  • In thanksgiving for people who work to show God’s love in bringing together divided communities and to heal the wounds of past wrongs.
  • That we may seek to live in the image of God, loving and welcoming the stranger.

Scripture passages:

Nehemiah 8.1-3,5-6,8-10
