Mary’s Meals

Posted: September 30, 2015 in Fundraising

Last week’s assembly theme was Mission at home. This week we are looking at some world charities. Friday is CAFOD family fast day and may parishes are encouraging their parishioners to have just one meal and support the work of CAFOD.

Whilst we are still supporting CAFOD, this year we have also decided to support a small charity in Scotland called Mary’s meals. Mary’s meals feeds children in the poorest parts of the world. To day it will feed over 1,000,000 children in their schools.

MarysMealsMAGNUSThe founder of Mary’s meals in Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow. About 20 years ago he saw people in Bosnia in need of clothes, food and every day items. Similarly to the thousands of people who have supported the refugee crisis, he asked his parish for donations and then took them in his car to Bosnia. On his return, he found that the donations were still coming so he took another load in a larger truck. On his return again donations were pouring in. He gave up work for a year to carry on driving goods across Europe. 10 years later, he was supporting the poor and vulnerable across the world, however over a pint in a pub with his brother a seed was planted for Mary’s meals.

Whilst Magnus was delivering goods, the effect was con combatting poverty or the fact that many children could not go to school. He therefore came up with an idea to feed children at school. For this to work, many volunteers were needed. H12-MARYS-MEALS-SHED-1e found that when a system was in place, volunteers stepped up to cook the meals, serve the meals and was up afterwards. This is the world headquarters of Mary’s Meals. Because the overheads are so small the cost to feed one child for a year is £12.20. St James are going to be supporting this charity throughout the year.

Firstly, together with St Margaret Clitherows Church and Blessed Dominic, we will be collecting clothes. So please bring in clothes over the next 2 weeks. If they are a good quality, then they will be sold. Poorer quality will get money a different way.   Mary’s meals will be picking them up on October 11st 2015.

Instead of a Christmas hamper appeal, we will be doing a backpack appeal this Advent. What Magnus found was that the students getting fed did not have books or paper. This will help in this area.

Finally, lets keep Magnus and all at Marys meals in our prayers
