Walsingham 2019

Posted: May 14, 2019 in Our Lady, Pilgrimage

The story of the Walsingham Shrine begins in Saxon times. In 1061, the Lady of the Manor, Richeldis de Faverches, was taken in spirit to Nazareth, shown the house where the Annunciation took place and asked by Our Lady to build a replica in Norfolk. She was promised that ‘Whoever seeks my help there will not go away empty-handed.’  The simple wooden house that she built soon became the focus of special devotion to Our Lady. The ‘Holy House’ was later encased in stone to protect it from the elements.

For the past 7 years, St James has joined the Dominicans on their annual pilgrimage to Walsingham.  Our students have visited the slipper Chapel, lit a candle for the intentions of the school and joined in the Pilgrimage Mile.  As pilgrims, we certainly did not leave empty handed.  The hospitality of the Dominicans and the spiritual blessing received from the trip have created memories for student and staff alike.

“O alone of all women, Mother and Virgin, Mother most happy, Virgin most pure, now we sinful as we are, come to see thee who are all pure, we salute thee, we honour thee as how we may with our humble offerings; may thy Son grant us, that imitating thy most holy manners, we also, by the grace of the Holy Ghost may deserve spiritually to conceive the Lord Jesus in our inmost soul, and once conceived never to lose him. Amen”

Walsingham pilgrims’ prayer, believed to have been composed by Erasmus, c.1511

During Feb 1/2 term, a small group of staff headed of to the Holy Land on our annual pilgrimage.  We based ourselves in Jerusalem, visiting both Bethlehem and the Dead Sea.

The tour continues to Galilee, where we visited Capernam, Nazareth and Cana. It was a brilliant trip with excellent company.  photo’s will be shared in RE lessons and assemblies.
